OLFACTORY PERCEPTION AS A KEY TO SWEET SLUMBER: IT MAKES SCENTS!

Here are ten sleep-friendly scents for the bedroom that are sure to soothe your senses and pave the way to a restful night. You can find them in many forms, including essential oils, candles, and incense.

Lavender

A natural remedy for anxiety and depression, lavender has also been used in folk medicine as a useful sleep aid. A study at Wesleyan University showed that after smelling lavender essential oil before bed, participants experienced an increased amount of restful and restorative sleep.

Chamomile

It’s not just a tea! Inhaling chamomile can help release tension of both the mind and the body.

Jasmine

More commonly known as an aphrodisiac, jasmine is also an effective anti-anxiety treatment & sleep aid.

Vanilla

The sweet scent of vanilla has tranquilizing & anti-depressant elements to it (it’s even pumped into the air in some parts of Disneyland, “The Happiest Place on Earth”!) which can help you calm down before settling in for the night.

Clary Sage

Clary sage is a nerve-calmer, and its essential oil can also be used as a deodorant & antiseptic.

Frankincense

You don’t have to be a wise man to benefit from the mental peace and tranquility that frankincense’s aroma provides.

Sandalwood

Known for its diuretic and decongestant effects, sandalwood also treats insomnia & tension.

Ylang Ylang

Ylang Ylang has many calming properties and is also commonly used in beauty products.

Bergamot

Derived from the peel of a citrus fruit with the same name, bergamot reduces anxiety and depression. (It’s also the ingredient that gives Earl Grey tea such a strong and distinct flavor!)

Rose

The flower of love and beauty can also assist in your beauty sleep. A rose’s scent can send you into a deeper sleep and even improve your daytime cognition.

Caution: Stay away from stimulating essential oils before bed! Taking a whiff of lemon, rosemary, or peppermint may make it harder for you to fall asleep.
